We all know that Children under 5 years age group are at the highest risk of developing life-threatening illnesses. That’s why special healthcare like ‘Under Five Clinic’ must be needed for them. Not only the developing cities, and metropolitan cities but also the villages, even the tribal areas people have accepted this technique followed by trained nurses for their baby’s physical as well as mental growth and development, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s child health has come under the top priority as education has already helped society by giving so much advanced equipment for the treatment of not only children but also pregnant women. As per the Census,India has shown progress in Sample Registration System indicators:

2016 – 39

2018 – 36

2020 - 32

NSMS NURSING INSTITUTE supports the idea of promoting Under Five Clinic among normal people and it’s effectiveness on Child Health.

The effectiveness of this clinic on Child Health is as follows:

  • Under 5 clinic immunizes children against six killer diseases – Diptheria, Polio, Tetanus, Measles, TB, and Whooping Cough.
  • For nutritional surveillance, at under five clinics, every child is weighed monthly which helps in early detection of growth failure and PEM, anemia, etc.
  • Health check-ups cover physical examinations and lab tests done every 3-6 months by the Child Health Cards to give special attention to this age group of children.
  • Promotion of the use of ORS packets is a cost-effective way of preventing deaths due to dehydration.
  • In Under 5 center, the mother and the family are given family planning education, which is a center of concern for the health and well-being of a child.
  • Growth monitoring is the biggest activity done under “Under 5 Clinic” i.e. to weigh children periodically every month during first year of life, every two months during second year and every three months upto the age of 5-6 years.
